Participating Schools

The Taking Charge Program has been offered to all of the school districts in the District Health Department service area. This includes: Alcona Schools, Oscoda Area, Tawas Area, Holy Family Catholic, Hale Area, Whittemore-Prescott, West Branch-Rose City, St. Joe's Catholic, Mio AuSable Schools, and Fairview Schools.

In order for public schools to offer sex education programming, such as Taking Charge, they must go through a series of steps to be approved. First the sex ed advisory board (or PA 226 committee as required by the state to include parents, teachers, and other community members with an interest in sex education/reproduction school programming) must  have a meeting and make a recommendation to the districts' school board to provide programming. There must be two public hearings at least a week apart before the school board may approve programming at one of their meetings. Private or parochial schools are not required to go through these steps.

If your school district does not offer the Taking Charge Program to your 7th grade students, we would encourage you to talk to the principal of your local middle school. It is our goal to provide programming in all of our school districts so that the health of our students improve. Prevention is the most effective way to reduce our community rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
